Global "Bioplastic" Strong Enterprise Wants to Expand China

The world's first large-scale commercial production, "100% of raw materials from renewable resources rather than oil," bio-plastics are trying to share the big cake of China's low-carbon economy. Recently, the top level of NatureWorks, the world's largest commercially-available polylactic acid bioplastic PLA, visited officials of relevant Chinese departments to promote PLA's desire to build a factory in China.

"Maybe in the next 1-2 years, NatureWorks will build a plant in China to promote the popularity of related products in China." Mark Welbrooken, president and chief executive officer of NatureWorks, revealed that bioplastics are completely bio-based materials. , Biodegradable, reduce the consumption of 47% of chemical energy, reduce 59% of greenhouse gas emissions.

To popularize bioplastics

“China is undergoing an economic transition. In terms of energy saving and emission reduction, government support is strong. This is also a good time for NatureWorks to enter the Chinese market.” Mark told Nandu reporter that NatureWorks is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Cargill. The production plant in Nebraska, USA, has an annual production capacity of 140,000 tons and is sold under the IngeoTM brand.

According to Mark, different from petrochemicals, bioplastics are derived from the extraction of carbon and other constituents of natural plant sugars, which are transformed through processes such as fermentation and polymerization. At present, IngeoTM bioplastics can be used to produce a wide variety of end-use consumer products for everyday life, including clothing, household items, and household appliances. IngeoTM brand products are sold on over 70,000 store shelves worldwide, and Coca-Cola, Shiseido, Canon, NEC and other brands are partners.

To establish a local production facility in China

Dan Soyer, Asia Pacific Director of NatureWorks, stated that in China, the company has established a “bioplastics universalization” marketing strategy and hopes to “pull down” the industrial chain strategy to accelerate market development. Dan Sawyer said that the main application of the company's products is currently focused on disposable food utensils and packaging, but more and more electronics, telecommunications and consumer goods industries have started to develop IngeoTM bioplastics.

The raw material for IngeoTM is corn, and Mark said that the company is developing raw materials for agriculture and non-food plants. According to its plan, the "one-off product" market in China will be the first to start. “We have already assessed the location of the second production plant, which will have an annual production capacity of 280,000 tons. This factory may be in China.” It stated that the company’s goal is to replace 10%-20% of traditional plastics, which means establishing Twenty or thirty factories, so we must set up factories in China in the future.
