China's 10,000-ton Methanol-to-Olefin Industrial Test Has Received a Major Breakthrough

China's Dalian Institute of Chemical Industry, Shaanxi Xinxing Coal Chemical Technology Development Co., Ltd., and Sinopec Group Luoyang Petrochemical Engineering Co., Ltd. have made significant breakthroughs in the "Methanol Production of Light Metal Olefins (DMTO) Technology Development" industrial pilot project. Nearly 100% methanol conversion rate was achieved on an industrialized test unit that handled 50 tons of methanol, and the selectivity of low-carbon olefins (ethylene, propylene, butylene) was over 90%. On August 24th, a press conference on the technical achievements of the methanol DMTO industrial pilot project was held at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. On the 23rd, the industrial test project passed the national appraisal. An expert group led by Academician Yuan Qinglian believed that the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences applied the SAPO-34 catalytic material to the catalytic process of methanol to olefin and developed it. The corresponding catalysts and its associated circulating fluidized bed pilot technologies have been used to build the world's first 10,000 ton-scale methanol to olefins industrialization equipment. This technology is an innovative technology with independent intellectual property rights. Equipment scale and technical indicators are at the leading international level. The successful operation of the test device and the next step in the construction of a large-scale DMTO industrial device have significant economic and strategic significance for the comprehensive utilization of energy and the diversification of low-carbon olefin feedstocks in China.

The relevant national ministries, Chinese Academy of Sciences and relevant provincial and municipal leaders have given great attention and support to the project. Vice Chairman of the National People's Congress Gu Xiulian, vice chairman of the National People's Congress, President Lu Yongxiang of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Vice President Shi Erwei, Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference Zhang Yiming, Deputy Governor of Shaanxi Province Yuan Chunqing, Deputy Governor of the People's Republic of China Hong Feng and the relevant leaders of the National Development and Reform Commission He participated in the press conference of "DMTO (Methanol Production of Low Carbon Olefins) Industrial Test Project".

According to experts, low-carbon olefins such as ethylene and propylene are important basic organic chemical raw materials, and plastics production, synthetic fibers, etc. are inseparable from olefins. Naphtha derived from petroleum refining is the main raw material for olefin production. China's oil demand is far greater than domestic oil production. Nearly 40% of crude oil relies on imports, while international crude oil prices have risen steadily in recent years and have now exceeded the $70/barrel mark. In this form, the diversification of raw materials for the production of ethylene and propylene is a major issue related to the country's energy security.

With the maturation of natural gas or coal-to-syngas technology for the production of methanol, the production of low-carbon olefins (MTO) from natural gas or coal via methanol has become a focused production route, and it is a core technology related to this route. It mainly focuses on the MTO process.

In recent years, in view of the fact that China’s oil production is insufficient and import demand is increasing year by year, the central government proposes to speed up the development of methanol, ethanol, dimethyl ether, coal oil, etc. as a substitute for petroleum. Therefore, methanol is used as a raw material to produce lower olefins. The MTO technology has become the only way to develop a new type of coal chemical industry and realize the national strategy of “substituting coal for oil”. Its ethylene and propylene products and downstream ethylene glycol, acrylic acid, polyethylene, and polypropylene products have a vast market and huge economic potential. .

Relevant state ministries and commissions and the Chinese Academy of Sciences are based on the national conditions. As early as during the “6th Five-Year Plan” period, they designated non-oil routes for the production of low-carbon olefins as a major project, giving priority and continuous support. Based on the urgent need of the state, the Dalian Institute of Chemicals of the Chinese Academy of Sciences conducted research on the preparation of low-carbon olefins from natural gas (or coal) from the beginning of the 1980s. The catalyst preparation, amplification, and two-stage pilot tests of fixed and fluidized beds were completed. Core technologies such as catalysts and reaction processes continue to make breakthroughs. On this basis, it also persisted in research and exploration and strived to achieve industrialization.

In the mid-1990s, Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences and UOP Corporation of the United States completed the MTO pilot test. At that time, due to relatively low crude oil prices and the immature methanol production technology, the technology had not been industrialized at home and abroad.

In August 2004, the Dalian Xinxue Coal Chemical Technology Development Co., Ltd. invested in the construction and management of the equipment and the Luoyang, China Petrochemical Corporation, using the proprietary catalysts and circulating fluidized bed pilot test technologies that have been successfully developed by the Dalian Institute of Chemicals. The petrochemical engineering company carried out engineering design and the three companies took advantage of each other's advantages to cooperate and jointly conduct industrial tests for the daily processing of 50 tons of methanol. After two years of concerted efforts, the industrialized test equipment was successfully driven at one time, successfully completed the predetermined phase objectives, and obtained the basic design data for the construction of large-scale chemical industrial devices, thereby realizing the development of industrialized complete sets of technologies.

At present, the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences has established a project industrialization leading group. The National Development and Reform Commission and the Chinese Academy of Sciences are actively promoting the industrialization of the project in order to quickly industrialize the major independent innovation scientific and technological achievements that the country urgently needs and make contributions to the country’s construction.
