Daewoo Shipbuilding Development VLCC Oil Storage Tank New Technology

Daewoo Shipbuilding Marine has developed a new super large oil tanker (VLCC) storage tank construction technology. This technology extends the life of the VLCC and increases its construction efficiency.

As the VLCC is fully loaded with oil, the waves will cause the ship to sway and bump, causing the oil in the oil storage tank to have a large impact on the oil storage bulkhead, which will also increase the load on the oil storage tank, thus posing a safety hazard. In order to protect the oil storage tank and reduce the impact of oil, the traditional shipbuilding method is to add an additional steel structural member laterally connecting the two walls in the huge oil storage tank, and the structural member is called a horizontal additional bolt. The new technology design concept of Daewoo Shipbuilding Marine is to completely remove the traditional horizontal bolts and replace them with vertical partition wall structure. This new structure has increased impact strength, can protect bulkheads, and can reduce oil. The collision force can extend the service life of the oil tank.

The traditional horizontal additional bolts generally have a self-weight of about 30 tons. The usual construction method is to install them in the oil storage tank. The construction method is to install the welding on the high-altitude scaffolding, and various dangerous accidents will occur, and the construction is extremely difficult. Convenience, the time and expense of the entire process becomes a major burden for the shipyard to build VLCC.
