As the Jupiter satellite "Europa" spews water, it is considered to be one of the best places to find extraterrestrial life in the solar system. Photographs sent back through the Hubble Telescope show that there is excess hydrogen and oxygen on the south side of the planet. Having determined the presence of water, scientists are likely to visit its surface to explore the underground ocean.
NASA’s director of planetary sciences, Dr. James Green, said: “The presence of water makes scientists speculate that the Europa we know today is hiding life.†This is exciting and there may be organic molecules on the surface besides the ocean. The results of this study were published at the Fall Meeting of the American Geophysical Union (AGU). The images of Hubble taken by scientists in November and December last year, as well as the old images of 1999, revealed the existence of a giant fountain. Every second there will be 7 tons of material ejected from the surface of the planet. Dr. Kurt Retherford, a member of the Southwest Research Institute, said at the AGU meeting: “This is really an astonishing number. How thick is the ice shell? Is there any lake or pond embedded in the ice? Are these cracks going deep? The water that really comes into contact with the liquid will fall?"
NASA has already made some preliminary plans for the Planetary Project - Europa spacecraft.
